GHANA - A Mission Field (GES Report)

Ghana –A mission field. The 2002 census report shows that 68% of Ghana’s population consider themselves Christians, 16% Muslims, 8% Traditional religion and 8% others. According to Ghana Evangelical Committee (G.E.C), of these 19.8% are nominal; 44.3 affiliate and 12% attend church regularly.

The G.E.C undertook a national survey in 1985-89 and came out with a report indicating that nominal Christians number 7 million and the 26000 towns and villages 15,000 have no congregation of Christians. This is quite stunning.

It also reported that the missionary vision of the Ghanaian Church is impeded by the unwillingness of many Christians to go to the "unevangelized" people of certain places in the hinterland.
Christianity is thriving favourably within the cities, but beyond that there is a considerable number of people that have not been touched by the liberating gospel if our Lord Jesus Christ.

Contrary to the known belief that the Northern part of the contrary is predominantly Moslem and the Southern predominantly Christian, most of the people in the North have now moved down south affecting the southern part with Islam religion, and the north currently dominated by traditional religion.

Despite the existence of various religions in Ghana all the major religions namely Christianity, Islam and traditional live peacefully with each other because Ghanaians are peace loving people, with a high sense of hospitality.

World Mission Report

World Mission Report (The Global Trend)- It is estimated that there are about six billion people in the world today. Out of this figure, only a third claim to be Christians, implying that there are about four billion people who do not know the Lord Jesus as their saviour.

The Need for the Hour

The church should awake and start intensive missions work in these parts of the country. Evangelism should be intentional and well planned. Both house to house and mass evangelism where the power of God is released to heal the sick and to prove that Jesus is alive should be encouraged, hence relevance of the living Jesus Campaign. The need of the hour is selfless commitment to supporting and getting personally involved in soul winning.
